Stability — James Park

Create a household operating base that can absorb ordinary income, schedule, and childcare shocks.

Fictional composite. One possible Path for one person at one moment—not a model answer or recommendation.

Path Goal

I want ordinary disruptions—an unexpected closing shift, a sick child, or a reduced paycheck—to remain problems my household can handle rather than emergencies that destabilize everything.

Success Evidence

  • We carry no high-interest revolving debt and hold a separate reserve for at least three months of bare-minimum expenses.
  • Childcare, schedule, and income disruptions have named backups that both my wife and I can actually use.
  • My work arrangement meets an agreed income and schedule floor without making Erin the default person who absorbs every change.

Current Position

I manage a restaurant in Seattle and have two children, ages six and ten. Staffing gaps often change my closing shifts, our cash buffer is thin, and one sick-child week can create lost hours and a credit-card balance. I am good in a crisis, but I am tired of making crisis management the household system.

Current Move

On Wednesday night, Erin and I will use the last 90 days of transactions to calculate our real bare-minimum monthly number. We’ll mark disagreements and missing costs instead of forcing an answer in one sitting.
